Less keys, more security?

What is safer: a traditional or electronic lock? In reality, security is less about the unlocking method and more about resistance to brute force (the ability to "force" the door open) and drill resistance for destroying the lock cylinder. Often, the weakness lies not in the lock itself but in the door strike, a small metal piece in the door frame that houses the latch. This can often be replaced for less than $10, significantly strengthening the door. According to Consumer Reports, the strikes that come with lock kits are often of lower quality, but this does not affect the nature of the lock, whether it is electronic or not. Drill resistance is a common weakness in all types of locks, except for keyless electronic models or high-end models from well-known brands like Medeco.

However, doors are the entry point in less than a third of break-ins, and often, they are left unlocked. Windows or patio doors are much easier to break.

In short, traditional locks offer few advantages, but their main drawback remains the shared key. Housekeepers, babysitters, renovators, repairmen… keys are often lent out, leading to a loss of control in terms of security.
