That's why, whatever your plans, you need to plan ahead and prepare everything down to the last detail. Discover the steps to follow to avoid any stress and live your move with peace of mind!

1 - Get your family involved

Children are very sensitive to change. For them, moving means leaving their friends behind, losing certain points of reference, etc. So before rushing into anything, take the time to discuss it with your partner and talk to your children about your plans. To ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, invite them to take part in each stage by emphasising the positive aspect of the move. For example, you can start by showing them some photos of your future home. Then, don't hesitate to discover the neighbourhood together. Finally, ask them how they would like their room to feel. This way, they will become full players in their new life.

2 - Estimate the space you will need

When you move house, it's the ideal opportunity to sort out and get rid of what you no longer use! It's also a great way to keep only what you need. Once you've done this, you can really estimate how much you'll need to move. Next, consider getting several quotes from specialist companies. You will then be able to compare, as these professionals may have different services and prices. Don't forget to specify the distance between your current home and your future home, check the list of materials provided by the company: boxes, covers, adhesive tape, trolleys, etc. When you have made your choice, book as soon as possible: during the summer, removal companies are very busy! Lastly, ask what guarantee is offered in case of damage or loss during transport.

3 - Calculate the total cost

There is more to a move than just the cost of hiring a lorry or hiring a specialist company. Take the time to list everything you need to think about:

  • Buy boxes, preferably plastic ones for their sturdiness, to store your objects.
  • Rent a space to store some furniture.
  • Send your new address to the various departments and agencies.
  • Apply to have your mail redirected.
  • Transfer the services you need (Hydro-Québec, etc.).
  • Ask to be connected to a new telephone and/or internet operator.
  • And don't forget lunch and snacks to get you through the day!

Money-saving tip: don't hesitate to recycle old boxes, by asking your shopkeepers around you, and keep your newspapers to protect the most delicate objects.
